Areca nut palm trees are cultivated in India primarily because of their small fruits, the “betel nuts”. Contrary to other species of palm trees, in Western countries there is almost no interest in betel nuts, so no rainforests are cut down to make room for large palm plantations. During its growth, the areca palm loses its leaves naturally 4-7 times a year. These leaves get collected, washed, and then are manually pressed into plates and bowls with the aid of pressure and heat impact. The water used to wash the palm leaves is collected and then used for the irrigation of plantations.
